We here at 45Drives
are big fans of Ceph (as you may know). Ceph is the premier open-source
clustering software. It works by linking multiple servers together into a
single unit that can provide object, file, and block storage. Storage clustering
enables important features that you may want access to, but are architecturally
impossible with single server solutions. Clusters are also becoming more
accessible than ever. 45Drives takes a bit different of an approach to selling
and supporting clusters than legacy vendors. But before we talk about that,
what makes clusters so appealing?

Understanding Snapshots
File system backup
or snapshots, how do you know which one to choose? If you’re unfamiliar with
backups – here’s a refresher. Backups are essentially backing up all your data
onto another server. This means if one server fails you have all your data
saved on another. To restore your data, it may take a little time as these are
read and write. But today I want to talk more about Snapshots as there has been
a little confusion over when to use this tool.

Your Guide to IPMI Hardening and BMC Security
Some of you may have seen the recent stories about security flaws found within the Baseboard Management controllers (BMC) within SuperMicro Motherboards. While this is indeed very serious, many of the articles were somewhat misleading by taking something that is by its very design, a very powerful feature - and giving the impression that the feature itself is the flaw. This is not the case, and the BMC is something many System Admins rely on in the enterprise daily.
